Conclusions & Recommendations

17.8.2 - MORDOR

Conclusion/Recommendation:

TEC encourages future research on the rational use of antibiotics, including exploration of Ct infection load by age group.

Action:

No action required

TEC 17

alternative indicators (Ct, serology), research

17.9.1 - Pacific Enigma

Conclusion/Recommendation:

TEC congratulates the researchers for an excellent study to explore unusual presentation of trachoma in the Pacific Islands. TEC thanks the researchers for the clear presentation of research findings and implications of results. These findings are likely to be informative as TEC considers any future requests for Zithromax® from the study countries.

Action:

ITI shared TEC’s congratulations with the researchers

17.9.2 - Pacific Enigma

Conclusion/Recommendation:

TEC recommends consideration of the collection of infection data in other such situations where there is an unusual relationship between routinely-collected clinical signs (TF and TT) as this has implications for the rational use of Zithromax®.

Action:

ITI will continue to entertain similar research proposals in the future

16.1.1 - General Recommendations to ITI

Conclusion/Recommendation:

Analyze & present on numbers of impact and surveillance surveys needed (forecast) and those conducted.

Action:

This analysis has been done and is included in the TEC17 book under the new data tab.

16.1.2 - General Recommendations to ITI

Conclusion/Recommendation:

Look more in detail at the sources of funding and channels; continue to analyze and present this at each TEC.

Action:

The analysis of sources of funding and implementing partner support was updated and is
included in the Director’s Report presentation during TEC 17 and in the book under the new
data tab.

16.1.3 - General Recommendations to ITI

Conclusion/Recommendation:

Present details on where we are not working, including:
- Suspected endemic but no surveys
- Known endemic but no partner
- Known endemic with a partner but no activity
- Districts under pre-validation surveillance (between impact and surveillance survey)
- Countries under pre-validation surveillance (between impact and surveillance survey)

Action:

This analysis has been done and is included in the TEC17 book under the new data tab.

16.1.4 - General Recommendations to ITI

Conclusion/Recommendation:

In the TEC book, include a table listing districts due for surveillance surveys during the upcoming year.

Action:

A table presenting plans for 2018 surveys is included in the TEC17 book under the new data
tab and will be updated for each subsequent TEC

16.1.5 - General Recommendations to ITI

Conclusion/Recommendation:

While reviewing each country application, project the Overview page for detailed review.

Action:

This is noted and will be done during future TEC meetings.

16.1.6 - General Recommendations to ITI

Conclusion/Recommendation:

Consider how to study alternative treatment strategies to accelerate progress and improve the rational use of antibiotics.

Action:

ITI are supporting one project to be conducted in Ethiopia (Tesfa), and continue to canvas
for new ideas from implementing and academic partners.

16.1.7 - General Recommendations to ITI

Conclusion/Recommendation:

Trichiasis Data Monitoring:
- TEC notes considerable progress towards reaching the TF goals and are concerned that lack of monitoring success towards TT goals is an obstacle to the achievement of elimination at the global level.
- TEC recommends that ITI examine options for monitoring progress in meeting the elimination goals for trichiasis burden to support advocacy and resource mobilization efforts.
- TEC requests ITI to report back at TEC 17 about how ITI can support this and potential resource implications.

Action:

ITI have discussed this extensively internally and believe this is outside the remit of
our organization. This will be addressed during the Director’s Report.
